Eight Bit Universal, One Second Eternal (2010)

Eight Bit Universal, One Second Eternal by J. M. Bowers

Eight Bit Universal, One Second Eternal appears on Cementimental Presents 1 Second Chipnoise Compilation Which Took Way Too Long on which all the contributions are just one second long. The piece combines two musical concepts. One refers to the 8 bit chiptune heritage which motivated many of the compositions on the compilation. The sound is synthesized using wavetables which contain every possible sample value that can represented using 8 bits arranged as a Gray Code. The other is that the oscillators which burst for just one second are tuned using ratios common in pieces by The Theatre of Eternal Music, namely 1/1, 3/2, 7/4, 2/1. In this way, perhaps, even a one second long piece might become universal and eternal, two things, it is thought, composers are supposed to aim for.
